Up to 50% of individuals 65 years+ report a fear of falling and 65% of them report a resulting restriction in physical activity. This fear, however, is linked to higher fall incidence. People report that they slow their gait to feel in control but research shows that cautious gait results in overthinking and stride variation, reducing balance and increasing fall chance. Our study focuses on those physically abled, but due to their fear, require a cane. We ask, how might we reduce the fear of falling for cane users? We hypothesize that redesigning the cane to encourage confident gait and exercise could help reduce the fear of falling.
